Accommodation
When you get your offer, you'll be asked to select accommodation. The easy part is where - Rowancroft! That's your only option if you're going for Medicine. All the medics live in the same area near Heavitree, just 5 minutes walk from St Luke's and 15 minutes walk from town. The hard part - which part of Rowncroft? Here is a quick guide to help you decide!
There is new accommodation being built which will be ready for September '09. We haven't had a chance to have a look round yet but from what I've heard, it's en-suite, new and ultimately more expensive. The current two sections of Rowancroft will still be operational to choose from.
Rowancroft Mews

The newer of the two blocks. This is a U-shaped quad surrounded by seven blocks. Each block contains two 5-bedroom flats (ground and first floor), and each flat has its own lounge, kitchen, walk-in shower room and separate toilet.
The rooms are small with a sink, a wardrobe, single bed, shelves and a desk. Though small, they are warm and cosy and have enough room for all your stuff.
The kitchens are very big however, with a set of tables, a couple of fridge-freezers and plenty of space for storage and cooking.
The lounge has a 14" TV with a Sky box (terrestrial channels only) and some chairs for socialising on. Good place for drinking games!
Blocks are interconnected so you tend to be able to hold parties more easily, plus the grassy area outside of Mews is a fun place to chill/sunbathe/play ball games!
Rowancroft Court

A series of 8 houses turned into dorms. These are much older and look a bit worn down. However, each flat has 9 rooms, a lounge, a kitchen, 2 showers and a bath/shower room.
The rooms are much larger than in Mews, each with a long table, a basin, wardrobe and single bed. They get a little colder in winter because of the age and size of the rooms, but not terrible.
The kitchens are ridiculous but managable. For 9 people, you get a small L-shaped kitchen with fridge-freezers to share, 1 microwave and a cooker. Somehow though, it works and everyone manages to eat without stepping on each other. The lounge/dining room is next door where you can watch TV on the same 14"-Sky box combo. This is just a bedroom converted into a lounge though so don't expect much space.
The showers are surprisingly good and there are more of them, which is a bonus. That's the trade-off with Court: bigger rooms, more showers, more people to live with, but a tiny kitchen and an older building to deal with. The choice is yours!

As mentioned, this is still being built but will be ready for September '09. We have some photos of it under construction to give you an idea of what it will be like, but long story short, BIG kitchens, nice en-suite bedrooms... should be a cracking place to live!
